Settle into your cabin, enjoy a hot dinner and wake up in the Netherlands. P&O gives you a smooth crossing with food, shops and evening entertainment, so the journey becomes part of the holiday.
This is more than a coastal tour. It is five nights on a traffic-free island, boat rides across clear blue water, Roman history, beautifully preserved old towns and a national park scattered across the sea.
With the four-star Island Hotel Istra as your base, each day brings a different side of the Istrian peninsula—and there is still time to slow down, find a quiet cove and enjoy the view.
The programme moves easily between historic cities, protected landscapes and relaxed island time. It feels varied without feeling rushed.
A traffic-free hotel island, private bathing areas and coastal paths surrounded by Mediterranean greenery.
Roman Pula, Venetian-influenced Rovinj and the ancient streets and mosaics of Poreč.
The islands of Brijuni and the forested slopes of Lim Fjord reveal Istria at its most scenic.
The four-star Island Hotel Istra occupies an exceptional position on St Andrew Island, a short hotel boat ride from Rovinj. With sea on every side and no road traffic, it offers the sort of setting that immediately changes the pace of a holiday.
Days can begin beside the water and end over dinner without leaving the island. Between excursions, guests can enjoy the beaches, swimming areas, Mediterranean gardens and promenades or make use of the hotel’s extensive leisure facilities.
The hotel’s 1,600-square-metre wellness area, pool complex and miles of beaches and promenades make free time feel like a genuine part of the holiday rather than a gap between excursions. La Serra restaurant is set within a historic summer residence, adding another layer to the island’s character.
Known locally as Sveti Andrija or Crveni Otok, St Andrew Island is part of the Rovinj archipelago. Its wooded shoreline, rocky coves and clear water create a peaceful backdrop that feels far removed from everyday life.
The island is made for unhurried exploring. Follow the coastal paths, find a quiet place beside the sea or simply enjoy the changing view towards Rovinj. When you do want the energy of town, the hotel boat provides the connection.
Rovinj grew from a fishing town into one of the Mediterranean’s most photogenic coastal destinations. Its old town rises from a compact peninsula, with warm-coloured houses packed around narrow lanes that climb towards the Church of St Euphemia.
At water level, cafés, small shops and boats give the harbour an easygoing atmosphere. It is a wonderful place to wander without a fixed plan—browsing the streets, pausing beside the sea and letting the view lead the way.
Brijuni is an archipelago of 14 islands and islets off Istria’s western coast. Here, open meadows, woodland and beautifully arranged parkland sit alongside archaeological remains and reminders of the islands’ remarkable past.
Veliki Brijun, the largest and most visited island, brings nature and human history together. Its landscape includes characteristic Istrian vegetation, heritage buildings and wildlife, while dinosaur footprints have been recorded across several islands in the park.
Pula carries its Roman history in the fabric of the modern city. Ancient gateways, temples and fragments appear between lively streets, but nothing prepares you for the scale of its great amphitheatre.
Known simply as the Arena, it is one of the world’s best-preserved Roman monuments. Its complete outer wall still rises above the city, turning a visit to Pula into one of the tour’s most memorable encounters with the ancient world.
Poreč combines an attractive waterfront with a historic centre shaped by more than two thousand years of life. Its street plan still follows the lines of the Roman town, leading visitors between stone houses, small squares and glimpses of the Adriatic.
The town’s outstanding landmark is the Euphrasian Basilica complex, celebrated for its early Byzantine architecture and luminous sixth-century mosaics. Even viewed from outside, it gives Poreč a sense of history quite different from the other coastal towns on the tour.
North of Rovinj, the sea reaches deep into the Istrian landscape through a long, sheltered channel bordered by steep, forested slopes. Although widely called a fjord, Lim is a flooded river valley—a striking natural corridor where the water is calm and the scenery feels enclosed.
Seeing it by boat gives the best sense of its scale. Settle in, watch the green shoreline unfold and enjoy the included lunch on board. It is one of those excursions where the journey itself is the attraction.
Few tours combine this much variety with such a relaxing base. Pula brings the drama of ancient Rome; Poreč offers mosaics and old-town atmosphere; Brijuni opens onto wildlife, parkland and islands; and Lim Fjord is best appreciated slowly from the water.
Then there is Rovinj—close enough to revisit by hotel boat—and St Andrew Island itself, where every return feels like coming back to a private retreat. It is sightseeing and relaxation in unusually equal measure.
