đ¨ Hotel Walram, Valkenburg
Hotel Walram is a welcoming, traditional-style hotel in a lovely spot by the River Geul, just a short stroll from Valkenburg’s lively centre with its cafés, bars and little shops. Guests regularly praise the friendly staff, the relaxed atmosphere, and the generous breakfast selection, which sets you up nicely for a day out.
It’s a brilliant fit for a Dutch House Party break too, with a welcome drink on arrival, a music night on one evening, and a free bar for two hours each evening to get everyone in the holiday mood. You’ve also got a comfortable lounge and bar, plus an indoor swimming pool that’s a real bonus after exploring, and en-suite rooms with Wi-Fi, a TV and tea and coffee.
đ° Valkenburg
Valkenburg is one of those places that feels instantly different from the rest of the Netherlands - hillier, greener, and full of old-world charm. The headline sight is the Castle Ruins, perched above the town with brilliant views, and right next door you’ve got the Velvet Cave and other marlstone caves that make Valkenburg famous, with underground passages, carvings and stories that bring the place to life.
Back at street level, it’s a lovely town for an easy wander along the River Geul, dipping into little shops and finding a café terrace for coffee and cake. If you fancy something a bit more scenic, the Cauberg and the surrounding countryside give you that South Limburg feeling of rolling hills and viewpoints, without needing to travel far at all.
đ° Aachen & Monschau
Aachen is a brilliant mix of grand history and relaxed café culture. The star attraction is Aachen Cathedral, famous for its striking octagonal chapel and its strong links to Charlemagne, and the surrounding old town is made for a wander, with the Rathaus and the open colonnades of Elisenbrunnen close by. It’s also the kind of place where you can happily pause for coffee and something sweet, especially if you fancy trying the local printen gingerbread.
Monschau is a complete change of pace - a picture-perfect little town tucked into the Eifel hills, where half-timbered houses line the River Rur and small bridges give you postcard views in every direction. The lanes are full of charm, with little shops and cosy spots for cake, and if you like local stories, the Red House is a memorable stop, reflecting the town’s textile past.
đī¸ Maastricht
Maastricht feels elegant and lived-in, with grand squares, Romanesque churches and a lovely riverside atmosphere. Start at Vrijthof, framed by the Basilica of Saint Servatius and St John’s Church, then wander the compact streets that lead you down to the Meuse for a stroll along the water and a photo on Sint Servaasbrug, the city’s iconic old bridge.
For easy extras nearby, make time for Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, a beautiful café-lined square by the Basilica of Our Lady, and pop into the Dominicanen bookshop inside a former church, which is one of those places you remember long after you’ve left. If you fancy a different vibe, cross into Wyck for stylish little shops and relaxed spots for coffee and cake.
