🌊 Waterford

Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, and it’s brilliant for a day out because so much of the history sits right in the heart of town. The Viking Triangle is the must-see area, with its compact streets, museums and landmark sights, including Reginald’s Tower, which has been a focal point here since the city’s Viking roots.

For something a bit different, the Waterford Crystal visitor experience is a real highlight, with the chance to see the craft and tradition the city is famous for. Then, for a slower pace, the quays along the River Suir are ideal for a gentle wander, with plenty of cafés and spots to sit and watch the world go by.

If time allows, Waterford also has some lovely architectural stops, including its historic cathedrals, which add to that “old city” feel without needing to travel far.

Kilkenny

A day visit to Kilkenny offers a delightful mix of medieval history, vibrant arts, and charming streets. Known as Ireland’s medieval capital, Kilkenny boasts an array of historic landmarks and attractions, making it a perfect day-trip destination.

Begin your visit with a tour of the stunning Kilkenny Castle, which has stood since the 12th century. The beautifully restored interiors and expansive grounds offer a fascinating insight into the city’s aristocratic past. From there, explore the Medieval Mile, a route packed with historic buildings, including the impressive St. Canice’s Cathedral, where you can climb its 9th-century round tower for panoramic views of the city.

Kilkenny is also a hub for arts and crafts, so a visit to the Kilkenny Design Centre is a must. Here, you’ll find handcrafted pottery, textiles, and jewellery made by local artisans. As you wander through the city, the narrow medieval streets are filled with inviting cafes, boutique shops, and galleries showcasing local art.

For lunch, stop at one of Kilkenny’s cosy pubs or restaurants to enjoy traditional Irish cuisine. End your day with a stroll along the River Nore or visit the Smithwick’s Experience to learn about the city’s brewing heritage. A day in Kilkenny offers history, culture, and warm hospitality.

🏞️ Wicklow Mountains & Avoca

The Wicklow Mountains are one of the most scenic parts of Ireland, with wide-open views, rolling hills, winding mountain roads and those classic glens and valleys that make you want to keep your camera out. It’s a brilliant day for taking in the countryside, with plenty of photo stops along the way as the landscape changes from forest and farmland to higher, more dramatic viewpoints.

Avoca is a lovely contrast to the big scenery - a pretty village setting that’s ideal for a relaxed wander and a wee break. It’s best known for its heritage of weaving and its traditional Irish feel, so it’s a great place to browse, pick up a gift, or simply enjoy a coffee while you take in the surroundings.
